An Accomplice to "Petite" Larceny

Yesterday we hit the grocery store to pick up a few necesseties and items for dinner. As we make our way around the store, I usually hand non-fragile items to James because he always wants to "help". He typically hangs on to them for awhile until he gets bored and tosses them in to the cart.

I think he has it out for me.

I almost always use the self scan checkout. Maybe I'm anti-social but usually I don't feel like dealing with cashiers. They never bag my groceries the way I ask them to either. (I could write a whole post about this itself!)

After everything was bagged and paid for we made our way out to the parking lot and towards the car. James said "coos coos" and shook the box. Ha ha-cous cous. COUS COUS! THAT WE JUST STOLE! We were standing in front of the Jeep then as I debated....do I go back in and pay for it or just go home? I'm annoyed. I SHOULD go back in and pay. It's only $2.45, we spend so much in groceries. We're already at the car. Did they see us walk out on security camera? It's starting to rain...

Did I take the high road and go back in? No. I loaded up our bags and came home. Good thing James is too young to know what the hell is going on and right from wrong. Then I would have definately had to go back in.

Good lord. I'm fraternizing with a known criminal!

I do know how you feel when it comes to going back into the grocery store after you FINALLY got out. If I realize I've forgotten something, I usually say, "Screw it," b/c I just don't want to go back in.

If you really feel bad about it, you can always bring the box back later and pay for it then.

I have done this recently: my 4-yr-old was holding a box of (organic) pop tarts and I didn't discover it until we were at the car. By this time my 1-yr-old was screaming because she was hungry & tired. So, we went home. The next time I went to the store, I got a box of the same pop tarts, and scanned them twice. So, I could sleep knowing I didn't "steal" a box of pop tarts. It was VERY tempting to rationalize it away, because I spend soooo much money at this nice, healthy grocery store.
