Ups & Downs

So, after suffering for a day and a half with a cold, today I suddenly had a revelation. I am not pregnant and I am not breastfeeding! DUH! This means I can actually take medicine to relieve my symptoms. I'm so accustomed to not being able to take anything that it was like I forgot there was such a thing.

We also got a call from our pediatrician's office with the results of Jamie's blood allergy test from Thursday. According to them, he is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, dogs and cats. On one hand this is a relief as I've suspected he might be suffering from an allergy to dairy for a few months now-but on the other hand, the other items have me a bit concerned. First of all, we have a dog, and Jamie has never exhibited any kind of allergic reaction to him. No itching/watery eyes or respiratory difficulties of any kind. The same with my and Jake's parents dogs or my sister's cat. I was also shocked about the peanuts as Jamie loves peanut butter and jelly. He has eaten nuts on more than one occasion! Could he just have a sensitivity to these items and not an actual allergy?

I have so many more questions. We have to make an appointment with an allergist. Peanut allergies can be fatal so I want to make sure we have all the facts. Just as we're getting over one thing in our house-of course another has to start.

Peanut allergy! Both scary and confusing. Confusing because, like you, I'm wondering how he can eat PB&J if he's allergic to peanuts. And scary because of the horror stories about peanut allergies (like the teen in Canada who kissed her boyfriend after he ate a PB cookie and she died). I haven't even let Seth touch peanut butter yet because I'm trying to reduce the risk of his developing a peanut allergy.

Wow! That does seem a bit strange to have that many allergies, esp. with the pets. If you haven't noticed anything then I don't see what the problem could be. Is it possible to get a 2nd opinion? That's weird that he would be allergic to milk esp. since he was breast fed. I would think (granted I'm not a mother or a doctor) that a kid whose had formula would be more apt to have a milk allergy than a baby that's been breast fed. Hmm?

I was tested for allergies a couple years ago because I was randomly breaking out in head to toe hives, and my lips were swelling. I looked stunning! LOL! Anyhow, they tested me for EVERYTHING and found I was allergic to, among other things, cats. Highly allergic to cats. I haven't lived a day in my life since my 5th birthday without a cat, sometimes two or three actually. Every night one of them sleeps on my head, they sit on my lap, they are all over me, yet I show ZERO signs of the allergy other than the allergy prick test at the allergist. Baffling.

I hope you feel better and I hope you get all the allergies stuff taken care of. It's pretty unsettling.

Ale had his tests run and he showed an allergy to pistachio, cashew, and peanut. Of the three the peanut was the lowest amount. We were told that the number doesn't really tell too much because it depends more on how well your body tolerates the allergy. If it turns out that Jamie is indeed allergic to nuts (and everything else) perhaps his tollerance is very high (hoping that is the case). -Peg Curvita
